On Anniversary of Passage of Social Security, Magaziner Vows to Protect Program from Cuts

August 14, 2023

Warwick, R.I.  — Today, Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) celebrated the 88th Anniversary of Social Security. This program, signed into law on August 14, 1935, keeps 22.5 million Americans above the poverty line. Almost 67 million Americans receive Social Security benefits, including over 230,000 Rhode Islanders.

“Americans deserve to retire with dignity after a lifetime of hard work, and Social Security is how we have kept this promise for generations,” said Representative Seth Magaziner.“I’m committed to ensuring these hard-earned benefits keep up with the cost of living, and I will always fight back against any attempts to cut this vital program that so many Rhode Islanders depend on.”

Some Republican members of Congress have proposed cutting Social Security benefits and raising the retirement age, while still giving tax breaks to billionaires.1 Rep. Magaziner spoke forcefully on the House Floor against Republican attacks on Social Security and vowed to protect the program from any cuts.

Rep. Magaziner co-sponsored H.R. 4583, Social Security 2100, which adjusts the Social Security benefit formula to better keep up with the cost of living and extends the solvency of the Social Security trust fund.

In May, Rep. Magaziner convened an RI-02 Seniors Advisory Committee to identify key issues impacting older Rhode Islands, such as the importance of protecting Social Security, and held a town hall in Cranston to hear feedback from seniors directly. Rep. Magazineris also a member of the Expand Social Security Caucus.
