FY24 Community Project Funding Requests

Rep. Magaziner has submitted the following funding requests for 15 community projects in Rhode Island’s Second Congressional District to the House Appropriations Committee:

Town of Burrillville - Burrillville Handicap Viewing Plaza (THUD-EDI)

  • This project will provide a viewing plaza with adjacent handicap parking spaces, handicap drop off zone and handicap accessible viewing platform overlooking a planned artificial turf field. The project provides a fully inclusive view for disabled and elderly residents to observe graduations, sport events, and other community events.

Town of Coventry - General Technology and Equipment Upgrades for Coventry Police Department (CJS-COPS)

  • The Coventry Police Department Requires a new specialty K9 vehicle that is properly outfitted with special equipment to ensure the safety of the officer and the dog, two unarmored mobile command vehicles, a technology upgrade to increase the capacity of their servers to improve data capacity and switch to two factor authentication, communications upgrades in the form of portable radios for their officers (60 radios), and a mobile command unit trailer and pickup truck to respond to community disasters and crisis incidents.

Cranston Police Department - K9 Fleet Specialty Vehicles (CJS-COPS)

  • The Cranston, Rhode Island Police Department is looking to purchase four new canine unit specialty vehicles that are outfitted with unique equipment to ensure the safety of the handler and dog. he K9 units provide special functions such as assisting with missing persons, community outreach, and one of the canines is a therapy dog who will have a specialty vehicle equipped with car seats and transport of victims, particularly young children.

Town of East Greenwich - Waterfront Development Plan (CJS-NOAA)

  • This project includes two main elements; a public right-of-way (ROW) feasibility study and associated ROW improvements and the development of a shoreline access path, shelter and accessible dock platform. This project aims to provide environmental protection, shoreline access, and pedestrian right of way improvements.

Family Service of Rhode Island, Inc (City of Providence). - Mount Pleasant Academy Renovation (THUD-EDI)

  • The funding would be used to rehabilitate Mount Pleasant Academy, a premiere facility for children in grades pre-K through 8 who cannot be served in the public schools because of psychiatric, emotional or behavioral challenges or because they are functioning on the Autism Spectrum. The rehabilitation will provide safety improvements to the building and upgrade facilities for the operations and educational enrichment of students.

Town of Johnston - Johnston Stormwater Management (EPA-STAG)

  • The Johnston Stormwater Management project will fund measures to manage, reduce, and recapture stormwater in the Town of Johnston. 
  • Implementing a solution to the chronic storm water flooding that occurs in the town improves the safety for pedestrians and vehicle owners which in turn saves taxpayer dollars. Resolving this issue benefits all residents, business owners, commuters, and visitors to Johnston.

Town of Johnston - Emergency Equipment (CJS-DOJ)

  • Emergency equipment will enhance the ability of the Johnston Police Department to respond to critical incidents and routine requests to benefit the residents and businesses of Johnston. This equipment will help improve traffic flow and reduce accidents and increase officer safety.

Town of North Kingstown - North Kingstown Indoor Recreation Facility (THUD-EDI)

  • The Town of North Kingstown is submitting a request for funding to construct an Indoor Recreation Facility that will dually serve as an Emergency Shelter for the Town and provide physical and mental-well being programming to all ages. The will allow the town to maintain programming during inclement weather or winter months and serve as a destination that brings revenue to the town.

Ocean Community YMCA - Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch Renovation (THUD-EDI)

  • The funding will be used to rehabilitate existing program areas at the Ocean Community YMCA to better serve some of the most vulnerable community members, including seniors, at-risk youth, and children on the neurodivergent spectrum. The project will expand spaces to provide programming and community wellness activities for disabled, elderly, and at-risk residents.

Providence Public Library - Providence Public Library (THUD-EDI)

  • The funding would be used to provide critical and functional repairs and rehabilitation to spaces at the Providence Public Library. The project will provide critical repairs to the building and expand spaces for the library to continue providing information services, education programs, workforce development, and arts and cultural collaborations.

Town of South Kingstown - Peace Dale Library Expansion (THUD-EDI)

  • The project will support rehabilitation of the outdated and underutilized meeting space of Peace Dale Library into a state-of-the art, multipurpose, fully accessible community space that would directly enable residents to access public resources that support academic education, workforce development, remote work and study, and personal health monitoring. The project will create an accessible space to provide public internet access and workforce programming and services to individuals with mobility challenges.

University of Rhode Island - SEC, Secure Computing and Data Infrastructure Project (CJS - NIST)

  • URI is looking for funding to upgrade their secure cloud computing capacity and hardware and pay for IT security personnel to scale up their innovative and cutting edge research they perform as part of their partnership with the National Institute of Undersea Vehicle Technology (NIUVT), a federal, public and private partnership. The goal of the project is to directly provide technological engineering innovation directly to the Navy and Electric Boat, the contracted builder of Naval equipment.

Warwick Fire Department - Relocation of Warwick Fire Department Fire and Medical Services Emergency Operations Center (HOMELAND – EOC)

  • The City of Warwick’s EOC is currently located in a facility that is approximately 70 years old and riddled with problems, including a leaking roof, obsolete equipment, mold issues, inadequate restroom facilities, and a malfunctioning emergency generator. The proposal would see the relocation of the EOC to Station 10 in the Potowomut neighborhood. 
  • The City of Warwick’s nearly 83,000 residents and its business community would benefit from having a modern, fully-operational Emergency Operations Center equipped with state-of-the-art security measures and upgraded equipment to assure the most effective and timely response in the event of a natural disaster or incidents otherwise affecting the well-being and security of the community.

West Warwick Regional Wastewater Treatment Facility – Wastewater Treatment Collection System Inspection (EPA – STAG)

  • The project involves the assessment and cleaning of the physical condition of the inside of the sewer interceptors located within Town to determine the structural integrity of the sewer, if the sewer is experiencing infiltration through cracks in the pipe, or if there is a build-up of debris that causes a sewage overflow condition.
  • This project will help avoid a potential catastrophic failure of a sewer interceptor by ensuring the integrity of the public sewer system which would potentially affect the Pawtuxet River and Narragansett Bay.

Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (City of Providence)- Woonasquatucket River Greenway (THUD-EDI)

  • The project proposes to construct a safe, ADA accessible, and visible connection from Hartford Avenue and the Hartford Park Housing Development to the entrance of Merino Park via Heath Street. The project is a valuable use of taxpayer dollars because it constructs much needed pedestrian, ADA and bicycle infrastructure along a stretch of Heath Street that lacks this infrastructure. Furthermore, this project focuses on one of the most underrepresented and impoverished areas in the City of Providence and State of Rhode Island.
