Congressman-elect Magaziner’s Statement on the Opening of the 118th Congress

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman-elect Seth Magaziner released the following statement after his first two days of voting in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“As I reflect on the day, I am filled with so much gratitude to all the voters, volunteers, and supporters who helped us reach this moment. I also feel a deep sense of responsibility to my constituents, who elected me to Congress to fight for working families across Rhode Island,” said Rep.-elect Seth Magaziner. “While the extreme elements of the Republican caucus are already trying to hold Congress hostage to their radical agenda, I was proud to vote for Hakeem Jeffries for House Speaker. I hope that the current dysfunction comes to an end soon, so that I can get to work to lower costs for working people, bring manufacturing jobs back the U.S., and protect the rights of all Americans.”

For the first time in 100 years, House Republicans have failed to elect a Speaker of the House on the first ballot. After six ballots, Congressman Kevin McCarthy has failed to garner the votes necessary to become the next Speaker of the House.
