Rep. Magaziner Passes First Legislation Through House of Representatives

July 14, 2023

Washington, D.C.Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed H.R.2670, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2024 (FY24), including three amendments authored by Rep. Magaziner.

“The National Defense Authorization Act is key to strengthening our national security and I am especially pleased that three amendments which I authored were adopted by the House,” said Representative Seth Magaziner. “These provisions will expand access to affordable housing for defense industry workers like the thousands of tradesmen and women employed in Rhode Island, ensure that service members and retirees have accurate and up-to-date online information on their health insurance plans, and provide service members with more affordable access to smart sleepers for infants to keep their babies and families healthy and well-rested.

“I am also pleased that the NDAA includes a much-needed increase in service member pay, and funds production of the Virginia and Columbia Class Submarines at Pentagon Recommended Levels, which will strengthen our national security for years to come. It is outrageous, however, that extreme MAGA Republicans in the House inserted a ‘poison pill’ culture war provision into the bill to deny women who served in the Armed Forces access to abortion, but I am hopeful that this dangerous provision will be dropped when the House and Senate versions of the bill are reconciled.”

Of the more than 1500 amendments to the NDAA proposed by House members this year, fewer than 20% were approved. Magaziner is one of only 116 House Democrats to have successfully advanced floor amendments to this year’s bill.
