Defending Abortion Rights and Ensuring Transparency in Political Spending: Magaziner Leads Charge on Two Critical Provisions for Funding Bill

November 6, 2023

Washington, D.C. - Today, Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) introduced and co-sponsored two amendments for the upcoming H.R. 4664 – Financial Services and General Government (FSGG) appropriations bill that would protect abortion rights and require the disclosure of political contributions by corporations. Both amendments would eliminate extreme language House Republicans included in their proposed version of the bill, which is scheduled for a vote later this week.

“Women should have the right to decide whether to have an abortion, and voters deserve full transparency about who is spending money to try to influence elections,” said Representative Seth Magaziner. “I’m calling on House Republicans to include these critical provisions into this upcoming funding bill, both of which have overwhelming support from the vast majority of Americans.”

Rep. Magaziner introduced an amendment to HR 4664 that strikes a section of the bill that prohibits the Securities and Exchange Commission from undertaking a political spending disclosure rulemaking – helping ensure the American people know where their money is going, and whether it is fueling political activities including election denialism, environment degradation, or draconian abortion restrictions.

Rep. Magaziner also co-sponsored an amendment that strikes a harmful policy rider that prohibits federal employees from accessing health care benefits to cover an abortion, affecting roughly 335,000 beneficiaries on the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) program.
