Following the Unprecedented Federal Court Decision Outlawing Mifepristone, Magaziner Signs Amicus Brief in Support of Abortion Pill Access

Washington, D.C. – Today, Representative Seth Magaziner (D-RI) announced that he has signed a congressional amicus brief in the case of Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. Texas in support of access to mifepristone, a safe and effective prescription medication that has been FDA-approved for 22 years. Mifepristone is one of two medications in the most common medication abortion regimen, which is used in more than half of abortions in the United States.

Magaziner joined 239 of his colleagues on the brief to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which comes just days after a single district judge in Texas issued an unprecedented decision that seeks to ban access to medication abortion across the country, including Rhode Island. If the decision is allowed to stand, the ruling could also threaten access to other medications previously approved by the FDA, such as cancer treatments, diabetes medications, insulin, and much more.

“I won’t stand idly by as an extremist judge in Texas threatens to undermine access to safe abortion care for women in Rhode Island and across our nation,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “I’m proud to join my colleagues in speaking out against this dangerous, unprecedented ruling, because all women deserve the right to make their own healthcare choices, free of government interference.”

The federal government has until Friday to seek relief from the appeals court. Until then, access to  mifepristone remains protected. The U.S. Department of Justice has appealed this decision.
