Magaziner Spends February District Work Period Meeting with Rhode Islanders and Visiting Economic and Education Hubs
Over the last two weeks, Magaziner held a healthcare roundtable to discuss workforce issues, met with municipal officials, and toured RIC, URI, CCRI, and the Port of Galilee
Washington, D.C. – It has been a busy February District Work Period for Representative Magaziner (RI-02), who has spent the last two weeks meeting with Rhode Islanders across the Second Congressional District.
“I’ve spent the last two weeks traveling across the Second Congressional District, visiting economic hubs and talking with everyday Rhode Islanders so that I can most effectively represent our state in Washington D.C.,” said Rep. Magaziner. “I am always happy to be home, but I especially enjoyed connecting with the working people who sent me to Congress to champion their rights and needs. My time back in-district has reenergized my commitment to the fight for working Rhode Islanders in D.C.”
Magaziner kicked off his time in-district by hosting a roundtable discussion about ways to support valued healthcare workers. During the roundtable, Magaziner announced his first piece of legislation, the Healthcare Worker Retention Act, which will incentivize hiring and retention in healthcare fields, improve healthcare professionals’ ability to provide high quality care to RI patients, and expand Rhode Islander’s access to safe, affordable, and reliable healthcare.
Magaziner then began a series of visits to local institutions of higher learning by touring Rhode Island College, where he met with interim President Jack Warner to discuss future opportunities for collaboration at Rhode Island’s oldest public college.
Magaziner then took a trip to South County, where he toured the University of Rhode Island’s Bay Campus with President Marc Parlange. During the visit, Rep. Magaziner received a firsthand look at the cutting-edge marine science and aquaculture research taking place at the University, which is creating good-paying jobs in Rhode Island and growing RI’s Blue Economy. He also toured Becton, Dickinson and Company headquarters in Warwick, a hub for the development of innovative medical technology that employs 500 Rhode Islanders and provides critical technology to doctors, nurses, and other medical workers around the world.
Next, Magaziner headed to the Port of Galilee, where he met with RI Department of Environmental Management officials and other local stakeholders. After connecting with local fishermen at the Port, Magaziner reaffirmed his commitment to securing the necessary federal investments to continue improving port infrastructure across Rhode Island.
Magaziner continued his tour of Rhode Island higher education by visiting the largest community college in New England, Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI), and meeting with President Meghan Hughes. Together, they discussed ways to help bolster CCRI’s focus on preparing Rhode Islanders for good jobs today.
Magaziner wrapped up the District Work Period with the team at the Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA), as he helped to kick off the State of Black Business Summit in Providence.
Throughout the District Work Period, Magaziner also met with elected officials, including Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and Johnston Mayor Joseph Polisena, Jr., to discuss future opportunities for partnership to benefit all Rhode Islanders. Magaziner returns to Washington today as Congress resumes session, and planning for his next District Work Period is already underway.
