Magaziner Introduces Amendments to Combat Fentanyl Crisis
Rep. Magaziner’s amendments will help stop the flow of illegal arms to cartels; protect funding for critical substance abuse programs
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02)introduced two amendments to improve H.R. 27 the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of (HALT) Fentanyl Act, a bill that is scheduled for consideration on the House Floor in the coming days.
“Fentanyl is taking too many lives across America, and we need a comprehensive approach to stop it at the source while also supporting those struggling with addiction,” said Representative Seth Magaziner. “My amendments tackle two key topics of this crisis—ensuring that grants for addiction treatment are not frozen by President Trump and Elon Musk, and to make it harder for drug cartels to get their hands on American-made guns.”
One amendment directs the Secretary of Homeland Security to work with state and local law enforcement to stop the illegal flow of American firearms to cartels that fuel the trafficking of fentanyl into the United States.
The second amendment aims to protect federal funding for substance abuse prevention and treatment programs that are vital to communities and individuals impacted by the fentanyl crisis and prevent the President from obstructing the timely delivery of federal grants for such programs.
The HALT Fentanyl Act would permanently place fentanyl-related substances as a class into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act.
