Magaziner, Kiggans Bill to Preserve U.S. Battlefields Passed in House of Representatives

June 3, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the House of Representatives passed U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner’s (RI-02) bipartisan American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act, legislation he co-leads with Rep. Jenn Kiggans (VA-02), to preserve America’s historic battlefields as the nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of its founding.

The American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act of 2026 extends federal funding for the American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) through 2036. The program provides grants to help preserve and restore historically significant battlefields from the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and American Civil War.

“We must preserve these sacred sites and honor the brave Americans who fought on our soil to secure our nation’s freedom,” said Magaziner. “I am proud to help pass this important legislation so future generations can learn from, honor, and experience the places where history was made and so many sacrificed for our country.”

The American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) is currently authorized through fiscal year 2028. This legislation extends authorization for an additional eight years, providing $20 million annually through 2036.

The legislation supports continued education and preservation efforts through the American Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants Program, a matching grant program that helps protect historically significant battlefields from the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and American Civil War.

In addition, the bill directs the National Park Service to study opportunities to preserve significant battlefields from the French and Indian War and the Mexican-American War.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
