Magaziner Passes Amendment to Investigate Racially and Religiously Motivated Violent Extremism as a Homeland Security Committee Priority
WASHINGTON, D.C. — An amendment introduced by U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, has been adopted as part of the House Homeland Security Committee’s Authorization and Oversight Plan, which outlines the priorities for the committee for the Congress. Magaziner’s amendment prioritizes investigating racially, ethnically, antisemitic, and religiously motivated violent extremism—shining a light on hate-driven violence that is on the rise.
“Violent extremism motivated by racial, ethnic and religious hate is a growing threat, and Congress must make it a top priority,” said Rep. Seth Magaziner. “This amendment ensures that the Homeland Security Committee is focused on confronting extremism head-on and that the federal government is fully engaged in stopping hate-fueled violence before it happens.”
During his remarks prior to the passage of his amendment, Magaziner also highlighted that both the FBI and Department of Homeland Security have repeatedly warned that violent attacks by lone actors and extremist groups motivated by racism, bigotry and other extreme ideologies pose a significant national security threat.
