Magaziner Secures House Passage of Five Amendments in Annual Defense Funding Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Representative Seth Magaziner (RI-02) secured the inclusion of five amendments to the annual Defense Appropriations bill, which passed the House of Representatives last night. The amendments reflect national defense priorities, particularly marine research and manufacturing, where Rhode Island has long been a leader.
“I am pleased that this year’s defense appropriations bill includes key priorities for the U.S. Navy and for Rhode Island workers who support the country’s strong national defense,” said Magaziner. “I fought to include these amendments so Rhode Island can continue to lead in defense research, development, and innovation, making our country more secure."
The amendments introduced by Magaziner and include:
- Magaziner #191 – Directs $10 million to support the development of a submarine extended length towed array sonar system designed to enhance a submarine's ability to detect and classify underwater threats.
- Magaziner #187 – Directs $7.8 million to advance the development of anti-submarine warfare training targets to enhance the US Navy’s capabilities
- Magaziner #188 – Directs $5,000,000 to support research for submarine carbon dioxide removal technology
- Magaziner # 189 – Directs $13.3 million to strengthen America’s coastal defense and infrastructure resilience through the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) to address threats like coastal erosion, flooding, and saltwater intrusion. This includes work conducted at institutions like the University of Rhode Island.
- Magaziner #190 – Directs $3 million for research and development to support the Army’s warfighter capabilities in arctic environments with materials that can withstand sub-zero conditions.
